A car drawing on a billboard is not a new thing in Ireland.
But the latest iteration of the bumper car is a lot more colourful than ever.
It is a “new” style of bumper car where the car is actually a real car that has been drawn on the billboard, rather than an animated cartoon.
The idea is that the car itself will become the canvas, rather like a real bumper car.
“It’s not a completely new idea, as a bumper is not an object, it’s just something that’s on a piece of billboard advertising,” says Mary Boyle, an illustrator who has done work for the billboard giant, Cineworld.
The concept has been around for about a decade, but Boyle’s first foray into the art form was in 2010 when she created a similar concept on the side of a building in Dublin.
Boyle’s work on the mural shows the car, a yellow Mazda, on a hillside, with the slogan “Hear Me Roar”.
The car is drawn in the shape of a bird’s head and there are the words “Hearing Me Roast” painted on the car’s side.
“I wanted to make it look like the car was a real vehicle,” Boyle says.
“It was really hard to draw on the sign because it’s a billboard, and I didn’t know how to draw in the correct angle.”
The car has become one of the most popular billboards around the country, Boyle says, with thousands of people turning up to get a look at it each day.
But Boyle says that not everyone likes the new style of car drawing.
“Some people find it offensive because it looks like a cartoon, while some people find the idea of a cartoon drawing on the advertising on a real billboard a bit weird,” she says.
The billboard is the latest project to be featured on the internet as part of a campaign to educate people about digital media.
The website has already attracted a number of reactions, with many people saying they found it “offensive”.
“People get offended by something they perceive as funny, while others find it very offensive,” Boyle explains.
“There’s no harm in showing off something that you’ve worked on for a while, and there’s no wrong way to do it.
But it does mean you need to take a little bit of time to think about what you’re going to draw.”
