A baby in the car seat of a caregiver who is on vacation has been found dead, according to the Florida Department of Health.
The Florida Department for Children and Families confirmed Monday that a baby was found dead on Sunday at an address in Pompano Beach, Fla.
She was aged 3.
The infant’s father was the sole caregiver for the child, according the Department for Health.
Officials were notified Monday afternoon and are still working to determine the cause of death.
The department did not say how the baby died.
A family member who did not want to be identified said that the baby had been resting in the back seat for three days before the toddler, whose name was not released, was found.
A nurse found the infant in the infant car seat after she took her to the hospital, according in the department’s statement.
The department’s medical director, Dr. Richard T. Tew, said that while the baby’s parents had previously told investigators that they had been home alone for about a week before the baby was discovered, that was not the case.
Tew said that because the baby has not been seen since, investigators are unsure how long she was in the vehicle and whether she was on vacation.
